Clinical governance has been an important issue in the British National Health Service for several years. This study looks to see how this has filtered down to front‐line staff, in terms of their knowledge about clinical governance, their attitude to it, and their implementation of it. A total of 539 participants across three NHS trusts in the South of England completed the Staff Clinical Governance Survey. The results showed generally positive attitudes and varying levels of knowledge and implementation. The use of this questionnaire enables services to audit their implementation of clinical governance, and highlights specific training needs for staff and their managers.

“My Story” is based on a life story approach. This study aims to facilitate therapeutic alliances by providing a format for older and younger people to interact.

Three pairings were studied to explore the experiences of the older and younger person using “My Story”. The focus of the case studies was on how and if any therapeutic alliance emerged.

This study found that in the two of the pairings, “My Story” helped to create a bond and mutual benefit for the participants’ central to a therapeutic alliance. This led one of the pairings to develop into an intergenerational friendship and potentially help with loneliness.

As this was an exploratory and small pilot, more cases and research are required to fully assess if “My Story” is a useful approach to develop intergenerational befriending.

Intergenerational befriending may be one solution that could help with loneliness and social isolation through forming a therapeutic alliance to make the befriending successful.

Loneliness and social isolation for older people remain a problem.

An original pilot was undertaken to test the approach by bringing together older people identified as lonely by a voluntary sector provider and pairing these with a student volunteer. The students visited the older person over six weeks to discuss their life story and create an artefact based on the story for the older person.

Hazel Kyrk’s recognised contributions include a shift in analytic focus from production to consumption, pioneering work to measure household production as part of family income, empirical studies of family behaviour, and contributions to policy. But her account of ‘wise’ consumption and its intersection with ‘high’ living standards is not well understood. The three aims of this chapter are to explain ‘wise’ consumption across Kyrk’s three major books, to consider its role in Kyrk’s empirical studies, and to explain why it fell into oblivion. Tackling what Wesley Mitchell described as the ‘most baffling of difficulties’, Kyrk explained what constitutes a family’s ‘good’ in a manner that was critical of mere emulation. Her 1923 book required that wise consumption include new and personal elements. Her 1929/1933 book detailed five qualitative criteria (balance between interests, full and varied experiences, originality, rational sources of satisfaction, and the use of scientific information). But her 1953 book weakened this normative language, reflecting Margaret Reid’s view that Kyrk’s account was too demanding. Although Kyrk felt wise consumption avoided paternalism, her peers disagreed (Hoyt, 1938/1945; Reid, 1938/1945). We close with some problems with Kyrk’s account and a brief consideration of its continuing relevance.

The purpose is to study the possible environmental impact from a supercenter construction on a 313,643‐m² land by the Bayou Bartholomew.

The sources of information were field work, flood maps, flood models, 100 years of rainfall data, soil quality, water infiltration rate, and traffic flows in the areas around the supercenter. Rainfall data were used to find the frequency of flashfloods under different flood models. The supercenter center obstructs the virgin drainage of water down the bayou. Bernoulli's equation was used to estimate delays in the flashflood drainage following the constricted flow after the construction of the supercenter. Overloads of traffic flows on selected city roads in the event of submergence of the main road were studied.

A total of eight major flashfloods per century occur. Bernoulli's theorem predicts flooding over wider areas and of longer duration. About 32,248 m³ of recharging of groundwater will be affected. Traffic loads will increase by about three times on the state highway 15 beside the supercenter. Rain‐drained automobile engine oil drips will cause bayou's water quality to deteriorate.

Prediction needs to be checked during flashfloods occurrences. Water quality in the bayou upstream and downstream of the supercenter needs to be monitored.

Policy makers in the city government and urban development will benefit from the findings.

The paper upholds the multifarious environmental problems and as such it is of interest to urban planners, farmers, water quality monitors, groundwater hydrologists, and businessmen who would like to serve the community.

There seems to be no controversy about Nigeria being an agricultural country with food sufficiency up till the late 1970s. However, in recent times the country is finding it very difficult to provide sufficient food for the teeming population which has resulted in the majority of the country’s citizens slipping into poverty. The ability of the country to provide sufficiently for the citizens was a result of a lack of reliable and effective developmental and transformational strategies in the agricultural sector of the country which is a major employer of labour in the rural community. To this end, this chapter mainly focuses on factors inhibiting the development of agricultural companies in Nigeria and how to overcome the developmental barriers in the agricultural sector in Nigeria. The findings from the review show that the bane of the agricultural sector in Nigeria is due to the lack of an agricultural regulatory framework and policy transmission mechanism and over-dependence on oil revenue amongst other things (Adams, 2016). It is therefore imperative for the country to embark on the development of a reliable agricultural framework and model that will aid food sufficiency in the country.

Since 1980, the principal form of crop loss assistance in the United States has been provided through the Federal Crop Insurance Program. The Federal Crop Insurance Act of 1980 was intended to replace disaster programs with a subsidized insurance program that farmers could depend on in the event of crop losses. Crop insurance was seen as preferable to disaster assistance because it was less costly and hence could be provided to more producers, was less likely to encourage moral hazard, and less likely to encourage producers to plant crops on marginal lands. Despite substantial growth in the program, the crop insurance program has failed to replace other disaster programs as the sole form of assistance. Over the past 20 years, producers received an estimated $15 billion in supplemental disaster payments in addition to $22 billion in crop insurance indemnities.

This article explores some of the images and words that service users choose to capture and represent their unique spirituality. It was written using material that service users produced as part of two projects focusing on spirituality and hope. The first project involved a group where service users were given a camera to capture something that represented their spirituality. The second project involved producing material for an art exhibition entitled Growing Hope, that was showcased in Sheffield as part of World Mental Health Day 2009.The article is written by Hazel Bryce, an occupational therapist working in an assertive outreach team (SORT) in Sheffield, and Lorraine, a service user who worked on the two projects and who has an interest in spirituality. They reflect together on the process of being involved in the projects and the meaning of this piece of work. The article was written together to try to capture a range of perspectives.

Hazel Kyrk’s contribution is the most advanced formulation of the economics of consumption as a social phenomenon, an approach to the analysis of consumption that, originated from Veblen’s theory, was developed in the US in the early 20th century. This approach was part of a wider stream of empirical analyses of consumption expenditure that had begun more than a century earlier.

Along with elements that can be traced back to the neoclassical tradition, in Keynes’ analysis of consumption, we find original elements. The dependence of consumption expenditure on the level of income, which is essential for asserting the principle of effective demand, can also be found in a long tradition of empirical studies. In qualifying this relationship, Keynes uses theoretical elements echoing key insights of the economics of consumption as a social phenomenon. There is no documentary evidence that Kyrk or the economics of the social relevance of consumption came to Keynes’ attention. It is possible, however, to develop reasonable speculative considerations to argue a link between Keynes’ elaboration and both the empirical literature on the determinants of consumption and the economics of consumption as a social phenomenon.

Social skills training (SST) is increasingly used as an adjunct to academic interventions for children and youth with learning disabilities (LD). A brief context and an overview of SST are provided and the issue related to the establishment of SST efficacy via extant meta-analyses is described. Generally, outcomes for SST efficacy are mixed, at best, with very little evidence of strong efficacy effects across the literature.
